WATERFOWL

Our early goose season starts September 1st and runs through the 25th. During the early part of the season we usually hunt oat fields, alfalfa fields and clover fields. Since we are an Avery Outfitters we use all Avery layout blinds and Greenhead Gear decoys. We can hunt up to 8 hunters, fully guided. Our guides are out morning and night scouting different areas, as we have access to several thousand acres of the most ideal goose farms in our area.

Early part of September can be exceptional for local birds, but as the month progresses into the second and third week we begin getting new birds. By the later part of the season it’s not uncommon to see hundreds, if not thousands, in any given day. Then, as the north wind blows, we begin hunting ducks in early October, which usually starts the first Saturday of the month. We focus on our private marshes this time of the year.

Basswood has a very large population of local ducks. Clients can expect to shoot mallards, blacks, wood ducks, green-wing teal and blue-wing teal on a daily basis. However, we do also shoot pintails, widgeon and gadwall this time of the year. By late October we normally start getting migratory ducks which continues throughout the month of November. We also begin goose hunting again in late October. We are able to offer combo hunts this time of the year, if available.

At Basswood, we only hunt in the mornings, as to not pressure the birds, we will hunt until we shoot our limit or until the birds quit flying. Many November duck hunts take place in flooded fields. As November wears on and the inland waters freeze we move to the mighty St. Lawrence River where we finish out our season.

Clients at Basswood will normally hunt out of our 21-foot Duckwater Venture. This seaworthy craft allows us to gun five hunters and their guide. Some days we gun from the boat, some days from permanent blinds or from layout blinds. We scout and hunt 70 miles of the St. Lawrence River. This time of the year can be very cold and unforgiving, however it can also be one of the best times as all remaining birds in the valley are congregated on the river. We will hunt a variety of puddle ducks, diver ducks and Canada geese. At Basswood, our float hunts are set up to gun both, divers, puddlers and Canada geese. Our season typically ends in mid December.
